Courtyard House Jodhpur

Updated: Oct 7, 2023

What’s better than letting in the invigorating diffused sunlight into the living areas and experience the transient shadows casted on the rubble stone wall opposite.

Although the intent is to keep the sunlight in control, otherwise there’s unwanted warmth which is not entertaining in this hot & arid climate of Jodhpur. The Living areas are wrapped around the landscaped courtyard, also acting as an interlink between the two floors and separating the private and guest areas and acts as focal point inside the 200 sq yard Residence.

The facade is adorned with locally available red sandstone (Ghatu Stone in Jodhpur) and screens of local beige sandstone (Chittar Stone in Jodhpur) to restrict the penetrating morning heat inside, creating a scattered light pattern inside. The green tinted glass also helps in controlling the glare while adding a hue in the interiors.

The structure rises on the south with spatial arrangement of toilets, store and staircase between the Living Areas acting as an insulating zone to prevent the southern heat gain.

The built volume with protruding stone walls acts as aperture to filter the South-Eastern light creating a dance of shadows in the courtyard below. It is rather a balance of conventional historical planning with modern outlook with which this mixed family residence is designed.

Green patches in the Front Setback & in the Centre of the plot provides a relief to the eye providing a soothing & softening appearance on the background of Red Sandstone.

It is in a way an effort to develop Sustainable Architecture, providing with Natural Sunlight, Naturally Ventilated Living Areas & automatically purging with day heat with convection Natural breeze during the nighttime.
